ABOUT THE WORK
Memories of Avignon is a portrait steeped in distance and restraint. The subject’s gaze turns away, as though caught between thought and departure — present, but elusive. With his sailor’s collar slightly dishevelled and his expression unreadable, he evokes a character from a half-remembered narrative: someone loved, perhaps lost, perhaps imagined.
The mood is quiet and cinematic. Muted blues and soft greys soften the composition, while the lighting, gentle and controlled, highlights the sculptural symmetry of his face without tipping into sentiment. There is no overt eroticism here, but rather an atmosphere of withheld intimacy — a study in absence. What remains is a kind of beautiful ambiguity: the emotional residue of something that has already passed.
