ABOUT THE WORK

A portrait of rare immediacy, The Tears of Another Day arrests us not with gesture or performance, but with the unguarded truth of spontaneous emotion. During the sitting, the subject began to cry — not on cue, not in character, but from some irrepressible interior. The resulting image captures that rupture without artifice: a young man adrift in grief, his gaze searching the viewer for understanding, or absolution, or nothing at all.

The body, covered in ink, suggests a hardened surface — an archive of symbols, rites, and scars worn as a second skin. Gothic wings, all-seeing eyes, serpents, cruciforms: each motif seems to announce conviction or defiance. Yet the tears render all that iconography strangely mute. This is not a body speaking with the confidence of symbolism, but a face that has slipped past its own defences — no longer narrating, only revealing.

The cool blue wall behind him, faded and softly mottled, evokes the patina of fresco, or the weathered surface of ancient plaster. It holds him in place like a relic, a votive figure suspended between eras — somewhere between the bruised ecstasy of Guido Reni’s martyrs and the vulnerability of Nan Goldin’s lovers. The lighting, gentle yet uncompromising, renders the skin with an almost sculptural tenderness, emphasizing the contradiction between the permanence of ink and the ephemerality of emotion.

In the end, it is the eyes that hold us. Wet, red-rimmed, and utterly unguarded, they confront us not with accusation but with a question. And like all great portraiture, this one does not answer — it simply endures.
