ABOUT THE WORK
There is no stillness in The Betrayal — only the charged aftermath of rupture. Caught in a moment of visceral vulnerability, the figure’s open mouth, clenched abdomen, and defiant gaze suggest the shock of emotional fracture. This is not passive beauty but beauty in recoil — a body suspended between resistance and surrender.
Rendered with painterly realism and tonal restraint, the portrait evokes the textures of weathered frescoes and ancient tragedy. The cool, oxidized palette, crumpled linen, and sculptural light call to mind a Hellenistic figure stripped of heroism and left only with sensation. It is theatrical, yes — but without artifice.
As with all of Troy Schooneman’s photographic works, this piece is composed with classical discipline and contemporary tension. It invites not just admiration but confrontation — an encounter with masculine vulnerability in its most mythic, unguarded form.

“Love never dies a natural death. It dies because we don’t know how to replenish its source. It dies of blindness and errors and betrayals. It dies of illness and wounds; it dies of weariness, of witherings, of tarnishings.
