ABOUT THE WORK

Lucifer the Merciful II portrays a figure poised in paradox — vulnerable and formidable, condemned and beatified. Rendered in luminous tones against a cool, textured backdrop, the subject’s stance is both exposed and unyielding: his nudity not a gesture of surrender, but one of confrontation. The tension between body and title invites contemplation of contradiction — what does it mean to be both fallen and merciful?

The sculptural quality of the pose, echoed in the marble-light skin and the classical contrapposto, draws on the iconography of martyrdom and mythology. Yet the work resists simple symbolism. Instead, it meditates on beauty as burden — a condition that inspires reverence, fear, and longing in equal measure. In this image, Schooneman offers not a vision of redemption, but an invitation to reckon with the intimacy of exile and the strange power of tenderness held at a distance.
