ABOUT THE WORK

A portrait of rare immediacy, The Tears of Another Day III does not rely on symbolic gesture or theatricality, but instead reveals the quiet rupture of unmediated emotion. During the session, the subject — unprompted and unposed — began to cry. This was not a performance. It was an involuntary act of vulnerability, as though something unspoken had breached the surface. What remains is a document of that moment: tender, unvarnished, and luminously human.

The sailor’s uniform conjures an archetype drawn from both art and cinema — the conscript, the voyager, the son returning from war. But here, that narrative armour collapses under the weight of feeling. The young man’s tear-streaked cheeks, reddened eyes, and slightly parted lips suggest not just sorrow, but a deeper, more searching melancholy — the kind that longs not for rescue, but for recognition. He is not looking at us so much as through us, his gaze cast into some imagined distance just beyond the viewer's reach.

The setting, reduced to the soft geometry of blue-grey wall and shadow, becomes almost devotional in its restraint. It allows the face — pale, luminous, and bruised by emotion — to emerge as the true ground of expression. The composition, reminiscent of Antonello da Messina’s Ecce Homo, insists on stillness and confrontation. We are made witnesses not to a narrative, but to a feeling suspended in time — raw, radiant, and unresolved.

The Tears of Another Day III reminds us that even the most constructed symbols — the uniform, the pose, the setting — cannot contain the truth of sudden emotion. In this work, that truth arrives without warning, quietly, and pierces us without asking permission.
