Photographic works by Troy Schooneman, 2013–2020
From 2013 to 2020, this body of work marked a decisive new chapter following the earlier Dylan Ricci photographs. Where the Ricci images were anonymous studies in form, these portraits place identity — however quiet, however fragile — at their center. Faces return. Glances are exchanged. Vulnerability becomes as important as musculature. The work is no longer a faceless ideal, but an encounter between subject and viewer.
Composed entirely in-camera and printed on museum-grade archival paper, these photographs refine the male nude into a space of stillness and reverence. Each portrait is structured with the restraint of Renaissance iconography yet carries the intimacy of lived presence: figures emerge from shadow not as mythic archetypes, but as men — poised between dignity and exposure, silence and disclosure. These are not fashion images, nor anatomical demonstrations, but contemplative works of art: meditations on erotic mythology, memory, and the complexity of desire. Formal in composition yet contemporary in gaze, they bridge sacred traditions of portraiture with an unflinching portrayal of modern masculinity.
Exhibited and collected internationally, this series remains the foundation of my artistic voice — the point where private experimentation gave way to a sustained vision of the male portrait as both timeless and immediate.
