ABOUT THE WORK
An unapologetic homage to the Barberini Faun — that most erotically charged of Hellenistic sculptures — The Lost Faun inhabits the liminal space between abandon and invitation. The subject reclines in a pose of theatrical languor, one arm flung across the brow in feigned sleep or erotic exhaustion, the other falling away to expose the torso with unguarded directness. The full-frontal display is not incidental, but essential: a deliberate echo of the ancient faun’s notorious vulnerability, his latent arousal rendered here not as pastiche, but as reclamation.
Yet what lends the image its enduring gravity is not mere provocation, but compositional intelligence. The tangle of limbs forms a tensioned triangle — one that vibrates between repose and readiness. The gesture shielding the eyes might speak of shame, but just as easily suggests invitation, as if the subject were both participant and performance. The Roman numeral tattoo and contemporary physicality disrupt the illusion of timelessness just enough to ground the figure in the now, while the earthy backdrop and warm chiaroscuro nod insistently to classical form.
Like his marble predecessor, this faun is both beast and boy, both offered and withheld — myth made flesh. The Lost Faun does not seek to tame desire, only to frame it: as spectacle, as inheritance, as mirror. Here, the erotic is not a secret to be suppressed, but a story to be told — unflinching, unashamed, and impossibly beautiful.
