ABOUT THE WORK
The Last Farewell II is a study in aftermath. The subject stands bare, his torso still taut with classical strength, but the gaze has shifted — no longer heroic, but distant, wounded, already elsewhere. His arms fall softly to his sides, one hand brushing the edge of a table, the other hovering in loose uncertainty. This is not a pose of triumph, but of departure.
Lit in the warm tones of an ending day, the photograph lingers in that fragile space between intimacy and retreat. The visibility of pubic hair — unshaven, unstyled — adds a human roughness that resists idealization. It signals a body not sculpted by fantasy, but claimed by experience. As in all of Schooneman’s work, the nude becomes a vessel for mythic resonance — but here, the myth has fractured. What remains is tenderness, grief, and the beauty of letting go.
